Many individuals go to great lengths to hide their behaviors due to embarrassment or fear of being judged. As a parent or partner, being aware of these behaviors can help you approach the situation with understanding rather than criticism. Here are some signs that a loved one may be struggling with shame around their BFRB:</image:title>

      <image:caption>Hosting a therapeutic arts workshop on Transgender Day of Visibility as a nonbinary person was both deeply affirming and emotional. It wasn’t just about leading an activity—it was about holding space for others while also holding space for myself. So often, trans and nonbinary people are expected to educate, advocate, or create without having room to just be. But in that workshop, surrounded by other LGBTQIA+ individuals, there was a collective understanding—a shared experience of navigating identity, visibility, and self-acceptance in a world that doesn’t always make space for us. There was something profoundly healing about guiding participants through collage-making as a form of self-expression. As we layered images, colors, and textures, I could see people not just creating art but piecing together parts of themselves—affirming who they are, who they’ve been, and who they’re becoming! In many ways, I was doing the same— and will always continue to do the same. Facilitating that workshop wasn’t just about providing healing for others; it was also a reminder that art is a space where I, too, get to exist fully, without explanation or justification.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I look at self-love as the idea of valuing and accepting yourself for who you are and for your experiences, whereas self-respect involves recognizing that you must treat yourself with dignity. If you’ve been to therapy (or read one or two self-help books), you know that treating yourself with dignity shows up in the forms of setting boundaries, making choices that honor your values, and acknowledging your rights and your needs! Both concepts are interlinked, since self-respect can help us walk closer to more moments of deeper self-love. Many years ago, while working in various settings—be it inpatient facilities, community behavioral health centers, or autism support services—I learned that sometimes the best way to redirect and reconnect was simply to take a walk. I had the pleasure of walking with my co-therapist intern, Genna, a wonderful dance-movement therapist, every day during our internship at a community behavioral health center in Philadelphia. Those walks became sacred spaces for us. We started with light, surface-level discussions—talking about the weather, upcoming assignments for our master’s program, or even what vegan meal we were hoping to share for lunch. As we strolled, our conversations naturally deepened. We shared how our families were doing, what it felt like to be away from home, and what we were exploring in our own therapy sessions. Those walks not only strengthened our professional relationship but also fostered a profound personal connection.</image:caption>
